The ABC of Getting Started with RBS Sharedealing

In our getting started emails we let you know about the tools that will help you trade online. However, making your first trade online can seem quite daunting. Actually, it's quite simple and on this page we'll show you the basic steps to get started, as well as some essential tips to make your trading easier.

Your Account Number

Your Account number is usually given to you at the end of your account opening process, but can also be found on your Account Confirmation letter. Please note: Username and Account Number are the same thing.

Login password

Your Login password will have been sent to you within 2 hours of opening your account, or within 2 working days if you opted to receive it by post.

A. How to log in to your account

Visit our website
www.rbs-sharedealing.co.uk and click 'LOG IN' to your Share Dealing account at the top right of the screen.

Enter your Username/ Account Number (which is the same thing) and 3 randomly selected characters from your password.

When you have successfully logged in, you will see your Welcome Page.

The value of investments, and the income from them, can fall as well as rise, and you may not get back the full amount you invest.

Top Tip

The first time you log in you may be prompted to change your password to something more memorable.

Remember to keep your password safe and do not share your log in details with anyone.

B. Transferring money and stock into your account

You can fund your RBS Sharedealing Direct Trader account by Visa Delta, Maestro, or bank transfer (BACs or CHAPS).

  1. To pay by debit card click Account Information from the top menu and select Move Money In from the drop down and fill in the form on the page.
  2. If you wish to transfer stock into your account from another broker, just download the Asset Transfer Form, complete it and send it to us.

Regular Investing

If you wish to build up a portfolio by making monthly contributions you can set up a Monthly Portfolio Builder Account. You must invest a minimum of £25 per month and you can choose up to 10 stocks per month paying £1.50 commission per transaction.

C. How to place your first trade

  1. From the top menu select Place a trade and select Sharedealing.
  2. Complete the form by choosing your investment type, the stock you wish to trade,whether you want to buy or sell, settlement period and order type. Enter 3 randomly selected characters from your dealing password and then click Submit.
  3. The price will then be valid for 15 seconds while you preview your order before you actually place your trade.
  4. Click Confirm, and you've just placed your first trade!

D. Further information to get you started

View your account summary

The Account Summary page gives you an overview of your account balances and the investments you've made. You can view accounts you hold with RBS Sharedealing including sharedealing account, Monthly Portfolio Builder and Self-Select ISA.

To view your Account Summary, from the top menu select Account Information and then choose Account Summary from the dropdown.
